The content in this blog is derived from my interview with Amy France, Chairwoman of National Sorghum Producers.
We recently had the opportunity to speak with Amy France from the National Sorghum Producers (NSP) about their efforts to support sorghum growers and the future of this versatile crop.
Supporting Sorghum Growers
The National Sorghum Producers work closely with state organizations like Kansas Grain Sorghum to advocate for policies and initiatives that benefit sorghum growers. By collaborating with local and national entities, NSP ensures that the interests of sorghum producers are represented in Topeka and Washington, D.C.
Maximizing Sorghum Harvests
To help producers make the most of their sorghum harvests, NSP hosts field days in states like Kansas and Nebraska. These events provide valuable insights into new developments in sorghum farming, offering tips on planting, managing, and optimizing yields. Amy encourages producers to attend these field days to stay informed about the latest advancements and best practices.
Exploring New Uses for Sorghum
Sorghum is an incredibly versatile crop with numerous applications. Known for being Non-GMO and gluten-free, sorghum fits well into various crop rotations, contributing to conservation efforts and improving carbon intensity scores. It excels both in the field and on the plate, offering twelve essential nutrients, amino acids, and antioxidants.
Sorghum has shown tremendous potential in breaking through traditional barriers, with research paving the way for new uses. Its ability to conserve water makes it an ideal crop for regions like western Kansas and areas along the Ogallala Aquifer. NSP is actively exploring opportunities in the dairy and livestock sectors, emphasizing sorghum's resource-conserving and water-efficient properties.
Advocacy in Washington, D.C.
NSP is deeply involved in advocating for policies that benefit sorghum growers at the national level. The Farm Bill has been a significant focus, with NSP continuously pushing for its passage. Despite the challenges of a lame-duck Congress, NSP remains determined to secure a strong, five-year Farm Bill that supports farmers' needs.
Navigating EPA Regulations
As the new administration takes office, NSP is committed to educating policymakers about the benefits of sorghum. Regardless of changes in leadership, NSP emphasizes the importance of telling sorghum's story from a reliable source. Building and maintaining strategic relationships in Washington, D.C. ensures that NSP can effectively communicate the value of sorghum and advocate for favorable regulations.
