The contents of this blog came from my interview with Jan Lyons, 2025 National Golden Award recipient.
In the world of American ranching, few names carry the weight and respect of Jan Lyons. This year, her decades of dedication to the livestock and beef industries are being recognized with one of the highest honors in agriculture: the 2025 National Golden Spur Award.
Lyons, co-owner of a prominent Angus ranch near Manhattan, Kansas, has long been a pillar in her field. Her story is not just one of professional success, but also of passion, perseverance, and a commitment to giving back.
“I was raised with cattle growing up,” Lyons shared in an interview. “Taking care of the land and the cattle—it’s always been a passion for me. I wanted to give back to the industry and be involved in it.”
That deep-rooted connection to agriculture is what Lyons encourages others to follow. Whether you're just starting out or decades into your career, she believes passion is the key to making a meaningful impact.
“If anyone is passionate about the land and cattle, and that’s something they really enjoy, I’d say just give it your best and get involved,” she said.
Lyons also emphasized the importance of inclusivity in the agricultural world, especially for women and underrepresented voices.
“I just tell anyone, follow your passion and give back as you feel appropriate,” she said. “Don’t let arbitrary feelings or thoughts keep you from doing what you want to do. Women have a lot to contribute, and we need all producers of all stripes to be a part of this industry.”
The National Ranching Heritage Association and the National Ranching Heritage Organization will present the award to Lyons on October 4 in Lubbock, Texas—a fitting recognition for a rancher who has spent her life shaping the future of agriculture.
