The content of this blog is derived from my interview with Bryan Thomas- DEKALB Specialty Crops Portfolio Manager.

Recently, DEKALB unveiled two additions to its sorghum hybrid lineup, DKS4376 and DKS4976, which have already sparked interest among growers. Bryan Thomas, DEKALB specialty crops portfolio manager, shared insights into their unique traits and benefits.

Meet the New Hybrids: DKS4376 and DKS4976

Bryan explained that these hybrids are designed to cater to diverse maturity ranges while addressing critical challenges like pest tolerance, drought resilience, and overall yield. "We're really excited about DKS4376, a medium-maturity hybrid that flowers in about 66 days," Bryan shared. "It features Sugarcane Aphid (SCA) tolerance, and even though Sorghum Downy Mildew (SDM) isn't a major concern in Kansas, the traits provide enhanced foliar protection. This hybrid is a reliable option for growers in the medium maturity range."

Meanwhile, DKS4976 offers a solution for growers seeking irrigated or fuller-season hybrids. "DKS4976 is a late-medium hybrid, flowering in about 70 days. It features a dual-stack trait for SCA and SDM tolerance and excels in defense against stalk lodging and root lodging," Bryan explained. He emphasized the hybrid's versatility and added, "What’s remarkable is how it’s outperforming later maturity products, offering growers more flexibility and confidence."

Sorghum's Role in Drought Management

In light of increasing drought conditions and stringent water regulations, sorghum is gaining attention as a sustainable crop. Bryan highlighted its ability to thrive with 30% less water than corn, making it an attractive option for growers, particularly in western states. "Sorghum is getting more attention as we're unfortunately facing more drought, as well as a lot more water regulations that are coming through too." Bryan noted.

DeKalb’s approach to hybrid selection is centered on sustainability. "To be part of the DeKalb brand, a hybrid must offer strong yield potential, drought tolerance, and disease resistance," Bryan said. "We prioritize hybrids that reduce risk and deliver consistent performance, even under tough conditions."

Limited Supply and Future Plans

While DKS4376 and DKS4976 are launching with limited availability this year, Bryan shared that DeKalb is planning a more substantial supply next season. "We’re hosting field days and plot trials to help growers explore the hybrids’ potential. By next year, we hope to have ample stock to meet demand—weather permitting."

A Legacy of Innovation

DeKalb's journey has been nothing short of groundbreaking, from introducing hybrid sorghum to pioneering green bug resistance and now leading with dual-stack traits. Bryan summed it up perfectly: "It's good to see a brand that's over a hundred years old and still innovating and still trying to bring value to growers."
